If you had seen our two tiny first‑floor bathrooms before the remodel, you would have immediately agreed: these spaces needed a serious update. Each room felt cramped and outdated, making everyday routines more difficult than they should be.

We ultimately decided to combine the two small bathrooms into one larger, more functional space. The process wasn’t easy — especially being without a first‑floor bathroom for a while — but the transformation has been completely worth it. Now, we’re excited to share the journey, the decisions we made, and the lessons we learned along the way.

Assessing the Problem: Why Two Bathrooms Became One in Our Bathroom Remodel

Our first‑floor bathrooms were tiny, outdated, and incredibly inefficient. Neither space was wide enough for a standard counter and sink, and if you were taller than 5'2", your knees hit the wall when you sat on the toilet. The poor lighting and old fixtures only made both rooms feel even smaller.

It was clear we needed a better solution and our debates began.

Fortunately, the two bathrooms shared a wall. The main bathroom (maroon and green) and the ensuite (lavender) sat directly back‑to‑back — so close that the mirror in the ensuite was mounted on the same wall as the toilet paper holder in the main bath. Two cramped rooms, fighting for the same footprint.

That’s when the idea finally clicked:What if we stopped trying to make two inefficient bathrooms work… and combined them into one functional, beautiful space?

Planning & Design

We spent a lot of time — and went through a lot of graph paper — planning this remodel. We measured the space carefully and sketched out countless layout options, trying to imagine how two cramped rooms could become one functional, comfortable bathroom. We also dove into bathroom design ideas, researching styles, layouts, and features that would work well in our home.

After a few months of debates and revisions, we finally landed on a layout that made everything click. In our final drawing, the new tub would sit in the exact footprint of the former ensuite — a simple shift that unlocked an entirely new sense of space and flow. From there, the fun began: choosing tile, the tub, the vanity, lighting, and all the details that would bring the new bathroom to life.

Getting It Done

When it came time to actually build this bathroom, we decided to be honest with ourselves: this was not going to be a DIY moment. So we happily handed it over to the professionals — and it was glorious. Zero regrets.

Of course, demo revealed a few surprises (because it always does), which led us to flip the entire orientation of the bathroom. Not what we planned, but absolutely the right call. The final result is better than anything we sketched on graph paper

1 Year Later

It’s been a full year since we finished this remodel, and we have absolutely zero regrets. We love this bathroom every single day. It’s functional, beautiful, and still feels like such an upgrade every time we walk in.

Some of our favorite decisions ended up being the simplest ones. We have the HVAC vent blowing out from under the vanity, which makes the tile feel warm in the winter — basically a built‑in heated floor without the heated‑floor price tag. The ledge next to the tub has become one of the most practical features in the whole room. And taking the tile, shower head, and shower curtain all the way up to the ceiling makes the entire space feel taller and more open.

Regrets? None. Not one. This bathroom has been a joy from day one, and a year later, we’re still so happy with how it all turned out.
